and there is no stopping her:
she is everywhere and nowhere;
she travels on by and still she remains.

It’s her voice which catches you first as you step out of this simple old house: a raucous, joyful clatter of sound as she tumbles down the waterfall, somersaults some across the stepping stones and plunges down through the lush green valley to the sea. Her voice is everywhere. In full spate, she is glorious. Always she flows on, and there is no stopping her: she is everywhere and nowhere; she travels on by and still she remains. The land thirsts for her; the sun sees himself reflected in her. She is the Earth’s laughter, her accompaniment the whispers of trees, her stories the dreams of fish. The river is the flow of all of our long- ings, the flow of all of our journeys. You can follow her if you choose; she’ll lead you to the court of the Fisher King; she’ll lead you out of the Wasteland.
Always She Flows On emerged from Water, the Source itself.
The river became a metaphor for something I had been exploring throughout All Things Wild: the remembering of a feminine nature that was never truly lost, only covered over by the layers of culture, expectation and identity.
Like Water, women have no fixed form. She bends. She carries. She moves… And while reading ‘If Women Rose Rooted,’ it became clear to me that this is what it means to become rooted in the Wild.
Not to become fixed.
But to become deep enough in oneself to remain in motion.
Not the woman in nature.
Not the woman looking at nature.
But the woman who remembers:
I AM NATURE.
And so she flows.
Through seasons.
Through motherhood.
Through desire.
Through grief.
Through becoming.
Through unbecoming.
Through all the versions of herself.
She changes form,
but never loses her essence.
Always, she flows on.
To be rooted in the Wild is not to become fixed.
It is to become deep enough in oneself to remain in motion.
